Chris Wiatr made only two mistakes during an otherwise steady round of golf Sunday in the qualifying round for the American Junior Golf Association's Northeast Open at Richter Park. He Mulberry Tote Bags double-bogeyed the 3rd and 12th holes but still managed to qualify for the three-day tournament that starts today.When Wiatr returned to Richter Park on Monday for a practice round, however, he was on a bit of a mission."I birdied both holes during the practice round and got my confidence back," said Wiatr, a 16-year-old from Woodbury who will soon begin his junior year at the Canterbury School in New Milford.And confidence is just as important as any club in a player's bag in a tournament of this caliber.The Northeast Open will feature 99 of the best male and female junior golfers in the country battling it out over 54 holes. Wiatr was one of 14 golfers -- 12 boys and two girls -- who advanced from Sunday's qualifier. He shot a 3-over-par 75 and made the cut by one stroke. The five players who shot 76s played a sudden-death playoff for the one remaining spot.Wiatr has enjoyed a fine summer of golf -- he tied for 18th with an 11-over-par 227 at the Stars of Texas Junior Championship earlier this month in Austin, Texas. He always enjoys playing at scenic Richter Park -- he tied for 87th in the AJGA event at Richter last summer."It's a great facility," he said. "There are a lot of good holes out there -- and there are a lot of tricky holes out there -- and they're always set up really nice."This year's field includes Michael Miller of Brewster, N.Y., who was the runner-up last year by one stroke at the Bottega Veneta SALE AJGA event at Richter. He fired a four-under-par 212, including a final-round 69, but finished one stroke behind David Zhang of South Glastonbury. Elizabeth Brightwell of Nellysford, Va., won the girls event last year with a 6-over-par Mulberry UK 222.
